There really are only three ways: you must be born into a royal family, marry into a royal family, or become the self proclaimed king of... whatever or wherever. However (as happened frequently in the Tudor era), the ruler of a kingdom can grant people titles. So, for example, if a king happens to like you or you are family to them, then you would most likely be appointed a title, such as "Earl of Wiltshire". The closer you are to the ruler, the greater your title would be. An example in history would be King Henry VIII's appointment of his best friend, Charles Brandon, whom he named "Duke of Suffolk"; duke is the highest title one could be given, aside from king, queen, prince, or princess. So, the order would be king/queen, prince/princess, duke/duchess, marquis/lady marquis, earl/countess, viscount/viscountess, baron/baroness.

However, the titles listed above are not royal, merely noble.

Well, you can't really become royalty unless you are born into it. Even marrying into royalty could only make you a consort, and not technically royal. Some monarchs can still grant titles such as Lord, Baron, Duke, etc. for service to the country, though it is very rare and not very plausible today, unfortunately. However, there is a way to have a title added to your name legally for a fee, though it would just be a title. It wouldn't make you a real royal or aristocrat. Those aristocratic titles are not royalty. You could work very hard to serve the UK in some way by becoming a well-known Prime Minister, like Margaret Thatcher to attain the lowest hereditary peerage title of Baroness. You could be a great actor like Laurence Olivier and be made a Baron. You could be a very successful well-loved composer like Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice and become Barons.But you'd have to be extremely successful to be let into the aristocratic ranking even at the lowest level.The Queen and Parliament do not freely grant aristocratic peerages.The only other way for a commoner  male to become a peer is to marry a royal princess.The sovereign often grants peerage titles to sons-in-law.

People who inherited these titles had families who rendered great services unto the crown;they helped the monarch win lands through battles.They helped the monarch by being strong political rulers who ran things the way the monarch wanted things to be run. They helped the monarch make lots of money and gain the trust of the  who believed that they had a ruler who was fair and strong,and could keep a country united.

Royals are King,Queen Regent/Regnant,Queen/Prince Consort, Prince and Princess. Each of these royals may also wear a royal version of aristocratic titles duke,marquess,earl,viscount,and baron. A royal version of one of these aristocratic titles is higher in precedence than the non-royal version.

And the ONLY way to be a royal is to be born into the family or be a female and marry into it. Men who marry into the royal family and are non-royal and untitled commoners may be granted a peerage title,but not a royal title.

Addendum: A KNIGHTHOOD is not the same thing as a PEERAGE Title. A knight can not run for a seat in the House of Lords in Parliament.

Get Adopted by a childless person who has an hereditary title.

In Scotland some titles are attached to estates so you would have to buy the estate.

Get knighted by the Queen for providing a service to the British empire.
