I was in the woods today, and my wife found a really interesting plant that we know nothing about. I'm looking for something to help me identify it. i.e., name, poisonous? edible? Harmful to pets?

  1. I'll add another website to the mix:  http://www.enature.com/home/

If you enter your zipcode (if in the US), and "Go", on the next page you can narrow your search by switching the category in the "results" box to Trees or Wildflowers.  That could save you some searching.

You could also take a digital photo and post it with your question (you would need to upload it through a photo sharing website like photobucket first).  There are enough botany people from around the country that someone should recognize it.

  2. you can go  here http://plants.usda.gov/ and try to find it based on where you live, also do searches of native plants in your state or region. since its in the woods, theres a good chance its native to your area. check out the library and find it there or even if you have a university  in your area go to the biology department and find someone working in botany or some other plant field.

  3. Here are a couple of sites you can try.  I don't know if they will be any good for what you want.  You can also do a Google search for "ID plant pictures".  There are numerous other sites there on which you may find info more to your liking.
