You can check out http://www.nick.com. They have a nicktropolis section where you can create your own avatar and talk to other kids, etc. And there are fun games to that you can play.

My daughter is 8 and she loves webkinz. You do need to buy a webkinz stuffed animal, but they aren't too expensive. They can decorate their room, buy clothes and food and play games.
