I am assuming that I am the Karen you are addressing re copy right? If not, here is my take on it anyway.

When I had my golfsouthafrica site, I had it with an excellent company called Site Build it!. The best value for money anywhere on the web.

Copyright is an interesting procedure. You can spend money on a lawyer and for some things that is the only way to go. With web based things, it is also accepted that if you have a copy, dated and mailed to yourself before anything is published on the web and if you include a caveat at the bottom of your web page that it is a copyrighted page, then you have the proof required in a court of law. Pictures are a funny thing though. People like to copy them for all manner of reasons. Some of those reasons you probably won't give a fig about - I want to put a picture of the Big Hole on my wall for my own pleasure for example.  That same picture being used wholesale to sale tours is a totally different ball game and should have either been paid for or it's use approved in writing by the owner. Aside from the copyright note on each page, you can and it is recommended that you put a copyright note with each picture. There is also a way to make your web pages so that the cannot be copied and pasted willy nilly.  I do not know how to do that but if you know someone who is into programming, they would in all likelihood know how that it's done.

If you are going to do the self mailing:

    1. copy each page and print it out. It is best to number each page.

    2. Write a cover letter stating the date and the purpose of this printing.

Sign it in your own hand. Better in court if you also have a witness or two who also sign it.

    3. Seal it well in an envelope, take it to the post office and send it to yourself. The important thing is that the postal stamp put on by the post  office is clear and visible. Some inks fade with time so I would register the mail.

4.When you get it, keep the mail, the receipt in a good safe place - DO NOT OPEN IT!!

Opening the envelope leads to a defense for the other guy in the event of a legal battle. Once you have the mailed version in hand, put your web site up for public view.

If you allow someone else to use your pictures on the web, your copy right is very much weakened so make such a happening a legal agreement with a promise in writing from the other guy, that he will point out that the item is still under copyright and cannot be copied.

Every lawyer I ever knew has said to me at one time or another "Cover Your A*s" so whatever you do, "Cover Your A*s"

Having said all that, do not cut off your nose to spite your face either. The golf courses I pushed on my site let me and everyone else use their pictures for free. It paid off for them in the long run.

This copyright procedure works in North America.  I have no idea how it would fare in South Africa but it should, in fact work everywhere.

    Hope that helps. :o)

  10. Picks? Oh you mean pictures (Pics). I'm not sure but maybe a blog would help. Inno (Reb) had one.

Bull is right with Facebook, then you could edit your security settings so that no eveyone gets to see your pictures.

  11. Flickr is one option.

I'm personally a big Picasa fan. It's a little software that organizes all your pics on the PC and makes it very easy to upload to your Picasa web album. You can choose who will be able to look at your pictures and with the software you have quite a few touch-up tools. It's from google and it's free (incl. 1 GB of web space).
