  1. http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/d...

    has

    9,366,786 records from 1940 thru 1997

They are all from California. You can search it by name, county or year. There are others, for other nations, other states, other counties and other time periods. There isn't a single world-wide death index searchable by county or town.

Unless you put it in your question, we can't tell what country you are in. It is the most frustrating thing Yahoo does. It doesn't matter if you go into domestic Yahoo or one of the International Yahoos - UK, Australia, Canada, India . . . - all of the questions in English go into one big "pot".

  2. I don't know that there isn't a county in the U.S. that doesn't have computer access-- just log onto your county's death records and check 'em out---

  3. sorry, your question is somewhat vague.  You did not indicate any time frame. Obits are usually in the local paper, but not ALWAYS.

You can "trick" the social security death index into doing a search, but you have to use the advanced search function. Leave the name blank (unless looking for a certain individual), and enter the state, county, and city.. you might want to filter the date box as well, to create a list of those who died in 2006, for example. Obviously, this works better for small towns.

This index is"behind" for a few months, and it will sometimes miss a person who is from your town, but might have died in a hospital in a large town in adjoining county, for instance.

If you are looking for a particular person.. you would do much better to post the name and the town, and see if someone can find that.

  4. Most of the newspapers have a website and the deaths will be listed there.
