I'm halfway through a loft conversion and want to put the wiring for lighting and power in so that I can fix the linings (plasterboard). I intend to have an electrician make the final connections for me but I want to install the wiring.

  1. If you are in the uk don't bother you are wasting your time.

You would have to contact building control at the local council who will arrange to inspect the work.

Then if it passesthey will issue with a completion certificate for the wiring.

It is not an electrical certificate though and so if you decide to sell your house and tthe surveyor asks for the electrical certificate you are stuffed.

The council will charge fro this wonderful service of course so you would be as well getting a certified contractor who is affiliated to some of the recognised trade associations.

He will have to record the work he has done , the circuits installed and the electrical readings along with a risk assessment report.

  2. Wiring has to run in a specific direction behind walls. For instance the wiring to a lighting socket has to run upwards towards the ceiling. If you don't have this basic knowledge you should leave it all to an electrician. Legally, you shouldn't be attempting anything electrical except the basics.

  3. Call a pro, its not rocket science, but if you have to ask; a pro should be doing it. There are tons of helpfull books at most home centers to enlighten you further; no pun intended.
