Is there a wi fi default key?

I have a htc phone and the wi fi i try to connect to asks for a key it is not my connection so if there is a default then maybe people dont bother to change it and i can connect? im new to wi fi and dont know much about it and i dont know where the connections are coming from. thanks

  1. I suspect you are trying to freeload onto someone else's wireless network and the key you are talking about is the preshare key or the preshare secret needed to complete the connection when WPA or WPA2 encryption is used.

    There is NO default preshare key.  The person who configured the wireless, if he is smart, will use a combination of letters of both cases, numbers, and symbols and a length of at least 12 characters to make it very hard for freeloaders to crash in.  The preshare key is much like the combination to a bank vault.  Its purpose is to keep undesirable people out.
