Question:

Is there a women's specific GS race ski on the market now?

I'm only 5'2", so I need short skis, maybe 155-160cm. I'm a recreational racer in a racing club. The racing skis I'm on now are taller than I am.

Would a slalom ski work on a GS course? I know slalom skis are shorter, but are they as fast as a GS ski?

  1. most people skiing at club level use SL skis for both disciplines

unless you fall under FIS standards pertaining to length and sidecut there is no real reason to add the extra expense of buying GS skis and a slalom race ski will be more piratical for recreational skiing after the racing is done

the manufacturer don't brand any race ski as a woman's ski pursay but a 155cm race ski(women's race ski) will have one less laminate than a man's size making it less stiff

skiing a GS course with a shorter ski will be slower but that will also force you to glide on a flatter ski to keep up so when you do decide that you need an upgrade to a true GS ski you will be that much faster than everyone else

You might want to call this number if you are in the market for a pair of race skis 1-866-754-3376(raceski-depot) they really know their stuff and can probably hook you up with a pretty good deal

  2. Use the slalom ski for GS also at the club level.  For racing in your situation, the ski should be 150 to 155 cm, a 160 is probably more than any SL or GS racer would now use.  If you read the current FIS rules, they set certain minimum lengths for each event.

The event that was GS 20 years ago is now a Super G and the current GS event is closer to the Slalom from 20 years ago.

  3. Atomic GS 10's come in a 158 length. Slalom skis will work but I'd go a bit longer to compensate for smaller base surface.
