Question:

Is there a word for stopping the heir to a throne from becoming king?

I am trying very hard to write a book. In it, the heir does something rather treasonous, so the ruler decides to keep him from ever becoming king. I'm trying to put it simply, but I just don't know the word!

Note: No, I am not looking for a synonym for overthrow.

  1. assassination could be one

or 'depletion of heirs to the throne'

i cant think of what it is

at the back of my mind

good luck with your book though

    what will it called

  2. If it's illegal, it's called Usurping the throne.  If legal, I'm not sure what it would be called.  See Shakespeare and Richard III.

  3. Wallis-Simpson-Camilla-Parker-Bowles-Flu...

Fluch is a German word for ______.

  4. I don't think there is a word, because I've never heard of it. Even the children of Henry II, tried to kill their father and ther king (patricide and regicide), still the father did not do anything to prevent them from taking the throne one his death. It is not clear that he could do anything anyway.

The two sons who took the throne were Richard the Lionheart and King John.

  5. Well usurping would be if the heir took the crown from the king by force.

The king could deny the crown to the prince.

You could have "and because of the crown prince's treachery, the king denied him the right to rule and appointed his younger brother/sister as heir."

  6. Camilla?

  7. Have the ruler redraft the Kingdom's laws of succession (call them something specific, like the [year] Act of Succession).
