Is there an adequate substitute for squats?

I hate squats. I don't want to do them.

What should I be doing instead? Lunges? Leg press?

  1. It depends what your training goals are. Squats are the best for developing strength and athleticism. They don't really have a substitute in that area. See http://kingoflifts.blogspot.com

If you just want to stay in shape or burn calories, you can do whatever lifts you want.

  2. Run up and down in the bleachers or stairs.

  3. The leg press is also an adequate substitute, given that the weights you are lifting are an adequate balance for the results you're trying to achieve.
