I don't know about checkers but there is definitely an advantage in making the first move in Chess and in Go too. In Chess white makes the first move; in Go black makes the first move.

In recognition of the advantage of having the first move in Go, at the end of the game the player of the white stones is given a few extra points of territory (over what has been surrounded during the game) to 'even up' the advantage black had in starting the game.

In Chess there is no compensation to the player of the black pieces.

White is prefered in chess because it moves first, gaining the initiative and a very small advantage. Chess tournament pairings are designed to not give players too many blacks in a row. Statistics from tournament games show that White wins about 20% more games than black, with about 40% drawn. The difference in colour is enhanced as skill levels increase, e.g. many Grandmasters try to win against other GMs as white and draw with the black pieces. With beginners it matters little, since they quickly play mistakes which dwarf the small advantage of being white.
