  2. Not knowing your budget makes answering this question very challenging.  Hotels, like apartments are expensive in SF.  Most places are going to charge in excess of $100.   Room rates are subject to 14% room tax.  Parking is extra so if you don't need a car, don't bring or rent one.

If you are in SF for surgery you may want a hotel near the hospital.  You may want to ask the hospital if they can recommend a place.

My favorite SF hotels are run by Joie de Vivre. Each of the hotels has its own unique style and are intimate and welcoming.   They have several hotels located near the big hospitals [Laurel Inn, Kabuki, and Hotel Tomo].

They also offer guests a free Golden Gate Greeter where they match you up with a friendly local who shares your interests, a neat way to make a new friend and get some insider information

a good place to check out a hotel before you check in!

  3. There are some  affordable hotels and places to stay in San Francisco. But I don't know what hospital you're going to be in. My suggestion is go to   http://www.discovering-sanfrancisco.com

There you'll find a list of hotels motels with maps. That way you can see what's closest to the hospital you're staying in. It'll also allow you to check pricing.
