Question:

Is there an aftermarket "OnStar" for used cars?

Do you know of an aftermarket supplier for an OnStar-like service that would automatically call for help in case of an accident?

I have seen one GPS unit that has a national help center, but it requires the driver to push the Big Red Button to initiate the call. With OnStar, an airbag deployment (or other event?) will initiate the call. I'm looking for something with that capability.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for all answers - especially from those with personal experience with such a device.

  1. No. On-Star is exclusive to General Motors automobiles.  It is hard-wired into the vehicle at the factory.  There are no after-market options for this service.

BTW... did you know that after the first years 'free' service,  that's included in the purchase price of the car, an On-Star subscription costs almost $20 per month?

  2. wish i knew for sure SAM, but as it goes, i have on star for 14.95 amonth. it lowers my insurance just for having it. and i have piece of mind knowing someone is there for me in case of emergency. when my lease expires, so does the on star.

if my lease ended early, i would not be able to transfer on star to any other vehicle. if you have a used vehicle with onstar" ready," you can activate that when purchased.

    hope that helped.

I know of no other market that has that here in the U.S.

    If your vehicle is equipted

  3. I have seen no such animal like that so far mainly because for it to work like the OnStar it would need to be incorporated through the vehicles computer system and that would be very expensive.................
