Question:

Is there an alternative to ginger?

I'm making shoyu ramen with the little ingredients I have here at the house. So I have to make alternations to the recipe. The problem is that I don't have ginger, since we hardly ever buy it.

Basically, I just want to know if there's something I can substitute for the fresh ginger. Is there a powder I should be looking for in the spice rack? If so, how much should I put in the recipe instead 2 cm of fresh ginger?

Normally I would just leave it out but I fear that doing so would lose me a lot of flavor in the ramen. Help please?

  1. At first - I was going to say that Mary Ann is preferred to ginger................but then realized that this wasn't a Gilligan's Island question.

As far as ginger - fresh is best.  Other than powdered - I don't know what one would replace ginger with.

  2. The first girl is right, but why not buy some pickled ginger, like that used in sushi plates, it keeps along time and is convenient to, just open and take out what you need, it last forever.

  3. You can buy powdered ginger on the spice aisle.  Actually, you'll find yourself using that quite a bit.  It goes into pumpkin desserts; and you can use it in apple & peach desserts; gingersnaps, etc.....

  4. I always used powdered ginger in a pinch; but the substitutions for ginger are (Ginger) -- Allspice; Cinnamon; Mace; or Nutmeg and Cardamom.

They won't be a subtle as ginger would be in the recipe. Mace would probably be the best substitute.

If it were a spiced cookie recipe I would say use any of the above.

hope this helps.                good luck and enjoy.

  5. Try a little cinnamon, some clove or garam masala. Although these spices do not taste exactly like ginger the do have the "warming" properties of ginger.

  6. You can buy ginger powder in the shops, half a t-spoon to a cm. x

  7. Ginger powder is available in the spice rack of all grocery stores. use

1/3 rd teaspoon of the powder. other things you may add are black pepper, kikkomen soy sauce (salty) , yellow mustard, tiny bit of sugar

for caramelizing, and top it off with 4-5 cilantro leaves.
