  1. Scientific name: Basella spp. Linn.

    English: Malabar Night Shade

    Tagalog: Alugbati

Malabar spinach, also known as Alugbati, Indian spinach, Ceylon spinach, Vine spinach, Basella or Malabar nightshade is an attractive perennial plant, mostly cultivated annually as a leaf vegetable.

The intensely purple juice obtained from the berries of this plant is rich in anthocyanin and is used as a natural food colorant and dye.
