  1. Most companies will cover you while VISITING in Canada, however, most companies will state that you have to live in the State that the insurance is written in MOST of the time.

If you are going to be living in Canada for 18months - you might be better served by an insurance company that is domiciled in Canada.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

  2. State Farm.

  3. Not for that length of time.  It is one thing to drive to Canada and spend a month as a tourist, especially if you go through several provinces.  Then your US insurance is good.  But if you stay in one province to live, after awhile you must have your vehicle registered and insured locally with local plates.  I'm being vague on actual times-frames and other details because it is different from Province to Province and you haven't included where you are going to live.  But be prepared to have local plates around 2 months after moving.

  5. For auto insurance the obvious way to get a great rate is do a rate comparison on auto policies. Make certain that you choose similar policies with the same deductibles, car type, zip code, etc so that all things are a good comparison.

What I usually recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have big name insurers and can give many prices on car insurance polices.

  7. When you come to Canada, you transfer your licence, and register and insure your car in Canada, unless you are exempt status, such as military on a temporary posting in Canada.  You will have to sign a document stating your car is to be removed from Canada when you leave.  You will not be able to sell it or trade it, because it will be in Canada on permit, not actually imported.

If it is a model that can be adapted to Canadian standards, you have the option of importing it as settlers effects, then you could sell or trade it in on another model if you desire.
