95% of the time I'm on the main PC, but sometimes my partner uses the laptop at the same time.

It's a Netgear DG834 v3.

Can I just unplug it?

Thanks.

  1. stop the connection from the computer (stop connecting to it) or just turn it off or buy another wireless adaptor

  2. You could just unplug it but then you will have to plug it back in whenever you want to use it.

I am just trying to figure out why you would want to turn it off.  If the wireless is set up properly; security and encryption, then there really isnt a reason to turn it off.  Thats sort of the nice thing about the wireless is that its there whenever and wherever you need it.

Without having to remember to go back and plug the wi-fi back in.

    Just my $.02

  3. yeah unplug it

  4. if you unplug it and your PC is connected to the router then your pc won't get internet access. Go into the setup and enable some good security settings like mac address filter and WPA security...then just leave the wireless on. no one will be able to use it unless they have an approved mac address and have the WPA security key...all of which you provide to them.  get secure and no one will be using your stuff

  5. Why not leave it on all the time? just password protect it and leave it on, no big deal.

  6. Yes, you can unplug it anytime you want to, but if you want to use the Internet on the main PC (assuming it's also plugged into the wireless router directly), then you'll need the router plugged in too.

Frankly, I never turn mine off.

  7. I think most people are missing the point of your Question.  To turn off the WIFI portion only. Log into the router home page 192.168.0.1  Username admin default password is password

From the Setup Section select Wireless Settings

From the Wireless Settings screen UNCHECK the Enable Wireless Access Point.

This will turn off the Wireless componets of the router.  To turn it back on just go to the same spot and CHECK the box.

Note rather than turn the WIFI on and off all the time, I agree with the others in just Enabling Security (WPA) and giving your Router a unique SSID and turn off the SSID broadcast.  This way once you configure the Laptop to access the router it will be secure connection and others in the area will not even see your router.

  8. Unscrewing the antennas is the simplest way.  If you are paranoid with security, you should enable security on your wireless.  You should go into a Yahoo Chat Room in Yahoo Messenger to get one on one help on how to secure your wireless.

You do not have to spend any extra money, but I want you to keep this in your mind the next time you purchase a new computer: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7390_1-6274537-...

  9. get a cisco tellecommunications wifi adapter- they work soooo efficiantly and they are low priced

  10. access the router setup pages and go to the wireless section.

    Turn wireless off
