Question:

Is there an ebook or similar for free of a nursery rhyme with sign language?

I am a trainee teacher and am teaching reception children through the theme of senses. I want to raise their awareness of deaf people and felt a nice way of doing this would be through teaching them some sign language to a nursery rhyme which they already know. Any ideas of where I could get some examples of these please?

  1. Have you tried doing a goggle search and seeing what you come up with?

  2. get in touch with your local deaf club and ask if someone can come in and teach the children a nursery rhyme. They will benefit more from meeting a real live deaf person.

Alternatively there are some signed nursery rhymes and stories by Gerry Hanifan and others. try the forrest book shop - they are not free but some are reasonable. Also have a look at the NDCS.

  3. If you go to: http://www.directlearn.co.uk/ashop/catal...

There are items like this, unfortunately they are not free, but they seem to start at £1.99 per pdf download.

I was told about this site by a friend who does makaton with children who have learning difficulties.

  4. There is quite a different between British Sign Language (BSL) and American Sign Language (ASL) - you haven't specified, but I have provided some information on BSL below.

I have done volunteer work with special needs children who use signing and it's so much fun, trust me you'll love it!! I can remember how to sign "baa baa black sheep" in Makaton signing.

If you want a list of various signs, check out this website:

http://www.artofvision.co.nr - you gotta wait for it to load, then click Live Videos and choose a video from there! Also, in the Links page is a list of websites that show signs for BSL.

  5. I am deaf and highly recommend this site

  6. Perhaps you could go to an institution for deaf children and ask them for help?
