  1. Sure, lots.  Here is a Popular Mechanics article of the top 5 electric cars being used today:

One of the best is the ZAP Xebra:

And there are some really good ones currently in development.  Available in California in October 2008, the Aptera typ-1e will cost about $27,000 with a top speed of 95 mph and range of 120 miles per charge.

Soon thereafter Aptera will introduce the typ-1h, a plug-in hybrid version of the typ-1e with a 40-60 mile range on purely electrical energy, and a range of over 600 miles total when in electric/gas hybrid mode, for around $30,000.  On a 120 mile trip, the typ-1h will get 300 miles per gallon.  The shorter the trip, the higher the efficiency.

Available in late 2009, the ZAP Alias will cost $30,000, have a top speed of 100 mph, and a range of 100 miles per charge.

Soon thereafter the ZAP-X will be available at a cost of $60,000 with a top speed of 155 mph and a range of 350 miles per charge.

Available in 2009, the Miles Javlon will cost $30-35,000 with a top speed of 80 mph and a range of 120 miles per charge.

Phoenix Motorcars will start selling their SUT to individuals in late 2008 or early 2009.  It will cost $45,000 and have a top speed of 100 mph with a range of 100+ miles per charge.

  2. Yea, some guy in Maine transformed his porche into an electric vehicle.   Its covered with solar cells, so he'll never run out of fuel.   Might need to take a bunch of extra food and a sleeping bag, but he'll get there eventually.

  3. Dana, reader comment #25 in the Popular Mechanics link refers to the EV-1, the car GM produced then buried  (they forgot to tell the engineers they didn't want it to work).  The Volt is in my opinion, a red herring.

  4. Ed Begley, Jr. (US Actor) collects them.

  5. There are many electric cars in use.  They are pretty much toys, however, because they are not the equal of even the most basic gasoline or diesel powered vehicle.

  6. I was on SMUD web sight last night and noticed some

  7. They have electric Golf carts.

  8. Canada produces the ZENN electric car, and exports it, but does not allow it to be used in Canada.  Zenn stands for zero emissions no noise... very dangerous for blind people.

Of course, as G.W. Bush would remark, perhaps blind beople should not be driving them.

  9. Here's a link to a bunch that are being used around the world.

1478 on this list, but many more exist...

  10. Yep the biodigester in Ludow has a self-sufficient electric collection vehicle that collects the food waste of 2000 properties and converts it into compost, heat and electricity.

  11. Actually, Domino's is using the Zap Xebra to deliver pizza.

  12. Reva is the largest selling electric car in the world. It seats two adults and two kids. It has been in production in India for several years and is also available in UK where it is known as the G-Wiz.
