Is there an evolutionary reason for women being hormonal around their periods?

Ok, wierd question, but is there a reason? by hormonal i mean getting cranky easily etc.

It's probably biological more than evolutionary. Her body's gotta do certain things to keep the whole cycle going and just because of the chemistry involved, that means moody side effects. I can't think of any evolutionary reason why women would want guys to stay away at that point in the cycle...

You're not gonna like this, but it could be the other way around. ;) There's an evolutionary reason for women to be nice to men during their fertile time of the month to make sure they get impregnated. Having their period means they can revert to a crankier state without risk of losing chances to make babies.
