Is there an inherent conflict between access and conservation in museums?

  1. Of course. From a strict conservation standpoint items would be sealed in a dark airtight container that was climate controlled. From the access viewpoint they would be out in the open were people could interact with them. The more access you give the shorter the life of your displays. It comes back to the purpose of a museum. It it a depository or a exhibit.


  2. No.  Although access should be controlled to help preserve items (as note in the previous answer) that does not mean that access must be denied.  It is a matter of balancing the concerns of both sides.
