Is there an official list of all the women who won the Croix de Guerre for driving ambulances in World War I?

A writer's obit (in 1972) claimed she won the medal, but, in a memoir (in 1942), her son wrote that she stayed in the U.S. throughout the war. She liked to make up stories about herself--but it must have been her son who supplied the info. for the obit.

  1. Here is a list of those who received the Croix de Guerre in WWI

No woman received the Croix de Guerre during WWI, and certainly not for only driving an ambulance.

  2. There should be - but you'll have to hope a Frenchman can come up with a website.

All our parents fiddled with their histories - we do too.

That's why, when doing research, you need primary sources. (And why I looked up some of my Dad's reported exploits.)

We might have come to America - but he was 100% Irish with all the blarney that contained. He had me believing Dr. Pepper was carbonated prune juice until I was in my 20's.

You can try Googling and then keep narrowing your search criteria.
