I've been there many times throughout my life, never had a problem.  

The only time it was really scary was when the Yucatan was hit by hurricane Hugo when I was there.  A couple of friends and were staying in Playa del Carmen and had taken the ferry to Cozumel for a day of scuba diving.  We took the ferry back to Playa del Carmen that evening, but it was so stormy we couldn't get off the boat.  Had to return to Cozumel and spend the night there.

We swam with our 5 year old at Riviera Maya with no problems. She did wear a life vest as we swam out further. She was able to snokel and ride in the kayak provided by the resort. It felt totally safe.
