  1. The only thing that we ALL share, not just as a society but as a species, is the will to survive.

  2. Unspoken?

It's drummed into you from birth onward.

  3. hmmm well we are social animals so theres that that 'binds' us.

but would you really say society binds together?

    its usually falling apart.

  4. It is surprising to know that despite all the development of our scientific understanding the true nature of the commonest of all forces in existence is still unknown. We do not know what gravity is, all we know that it is the weakest force in nature, and that it is associated with the mass of things, but we really do not know as how it comes to be. We know forces of heat, magnetism and electricity as interchangeable forms of energy We know that magnetic and heat energy can be converted into electric energy that then into mechanical power, but the force of gravity stands alone in the rest, still understandable to the mind of science.

In order to understand the ‘unspoken connection that binds society’, we will have to accept first of all that we do not each and every thing in existence, and then afford ourselves with some simplistic view of a society to begin with.

I see that we have come far from the days when we used to live huddled together frightened of almost everything out of the extraordinary, for whatever that meant for us then; we have come long time since the days we worshipped thunder, lightening and high mountains. The developments of science over the past couple of hundred years have taken us beyond our own imagination. Where we used to live together partly by the fear of the unknown forces all around us in the past, we still live together for the same purpose, but now we also see that living together would bring us extra benefits in terms of strength, peace, ease and comfort in living. We see that there are immense benefits in living in societies, where we feel we belong, are connected and recognised.

But what would necessitate for people to come together and stick together aside our need for security, comfort and recognition, I think, is the facilitation of our need to belief in things, belief the enables us to do things, feel fulfilled and right. The fact in this regard is that we all live in a make-belief world. And even when we live in seclusion, away from society we need some sort of belief to help us sustain our existence, to keep our mind in good form. But when we come together we believe in our togetherness, we learn to have faith. We have faith that there is the rule of law, there is social justice, that if something happens we are not helpless and alone, that we have support and protection.

There is nowhere perfect in the world. Just like their people all societies and communities have their weaknesses and flaws; religion points however points to perfection that people who follow a religion find it impossible to reach. Then if people would not come to have faith in themselves and in their abilities to overcome difficulties the societies would fall apart due to their internal flaws, and nothing positive would ever come out of their co-habitation.

I have seen, both in the east and in the west, human collective life being patched together by the use of various forms of connecting agents, religion being the most popular choice for the east, and teamwork in the west, where people work toward commonly understandable objectives. If we would learn to form our beliefs, and settle our mind, by reason of being in the ‘same boat’, we would fall right through into the laps of doubt.

  5. i'm not sure which society you mean, there are lotsa kinds, but...

no. society is a concept that makes us feel connected, but you might as well say community or demographic or generation.

  6. to noyesno,

Gosh, I wish it were so.  The 'theories' of society in general and other smaller sets of people...are painfully not regarded as solutions, but as a body of knowledge.  In the purest form of theory, their are only two variations: functionalism and conflict theory.  AND conflict theory, is easily consumed by functionalism.

But maybe functionalism is the thing...that binds us all.  Something so simply achievable always finds roots in possibility.  Don't pay attention to hysterical sociologists, or otherwise megalomaniac rebels...it's just an observable miracle to see social theory played out in activities like people watching.  That is why we like to go to the mall.
