  1. jose calderon said the photo was suppose to be a "affectionate gesture"

  2. I'm no longer a Pau Gasol fan. I'll always be a Laker fan, but I hope Yao gives an elbow to Pau's ugly face when they play each other..... But then again Yao won't stoop down to the Spaniard's level.

edit: My Cat is very wet, yeah its true Chinese/Asians do have slanted eyes, but how would you like it if they painted their skins black to look like African Americans? The Black peoples would go into a Rage.

  3. In response to Dan,

It's not just the European press all over this.  Britain is doing well enough over Spain in the Olympic games that I doubt a single soccer match is the motivation behind this story coming out.  This incident a huge deal and not because of the incident alone, but rather because it's just one more incident revealing overt racism among Spanish team sports.

I've noticed incidents like this happening quite often among Spanish sports.   Perhaps now Spain will finally be forced to address their culture's well known acceptance of bigotry.

A nation where many fans believe it's completely acceptable to throw bananas at Black soccer players and that nation's basketball team sees nothing wrong with posing for an add making fun of the eyes of the Chinese is a nation that has a deep set cultural problem.

  4. Unfortunately, they've done nothing more than make the comment that it was an "affectionate gesture." So stupid, a hug is affectionate but slanting your eyes to make pretend your Asian is nothing but insulting. Most Spaniards have a lot of issues with anyone who is different from them, there's a lot of racism towards blacks and Asians in Spain, I know because I'm Spanish (but currently live in the USA) and I've witnessed a lot of that racism myself, some from my own family living over there! The problem is that a lot of them seem to feel threatened by anyone different than them. Recently, I had some people from Spain stay over my house for a few weeks and you wouldn't believe how incredibly disrespectful they were to a lot of American culture, I found it quite insulting honestly and told them so but all they did was tell me that I'm "not Spanish anymore because I don't laugh at people who are different than me" to which my reply was "sorry but I guess I just have a more mature sense of humor." It's sad. I hope the Spanish team gets penalized for this, especially since they haven't even had the guts to apologize for offending some people. I'm not Chinese but I was offended because they make Spaniards, like myself, come off as total ignorant idiots, it's embarrassing. I bet they were just intimidated by how beautiful Chinese people are, personally I love their eyes. I'm glad the team got booed in China by the Chinese audience when they were playing, they deserved it.

  5. its pretty funny. but i am sure the chinese people take it very offensive. There should be some charges pressed against Spain. Do you remember when some dude in Europe made a comic of Prophet Muhammad? How many controversy that raised? Some Muslim country almost went to war cuz of that. I think this is the same thing as that. well not same thing but close to it. I wouldn't be surprised if the chinese nuke them in the future cuz of that.

  6. It was in poor taste, but I doubt the Spanish team thought it would be so offensive. Their comments suggests that they didn't intend to be offensive. However, it was wrong and Gasol acknowledged it. That said, I have Chinese friends (from China) and at times they have said offensive things to me as an American and as someone of Spanish descent without realizing they were being offensive.

And I know the English press just loved jumping all over this one. Why? Because England hasn't won anything of any international prominence for years. Spain won the Eurocup 2008 in which England didn't even qualify. Spain has won the Tour de France (3) consecutive years and Spain won the world basketball championship in 2006 plus added a gold medal in cycling in this Olympics - a sport both countries deem as one of their best.

England should worry about their own problems, like keeping those knife murders down to less than 50 a day in London! Perhaps they enjoy worrying about the Spanish team mocking the Chinese to divert attention away from all the crime they have in London.

EDIT: Like I said, England has their own problems to worry about - especially racially-motivated stabbings. Clean up your own issues first before you worry about another country that you have a long history of name-smearing due to jealousy.

  7. SPAIN'S SPONSOR IS CHINESE> IT'S AN INSIDE JOKE.

  8. Affectionate gesture? They can take their affectionate gesture and stuff it UP THEIR COACHES' ***.

There will be a penalty,as I'm afraid it greatly offended the Chinarians(uhh).
