Anybody here know a lot about bugs?

I am trying to figure out what kind of wasp this is, but I don't have a picture sorry I haven't seen one in years.

I live in Chicago, and I remember some HUGE wasps nesting in our yard when I was a kid. I tried google, and the closest thing I could find is Cicada Killer wasps. I think cicada killer wasps live seperately though (each female has their own nest?) and these unknown wasps, from what I remember, had a TON of them all living in the same nest/hive in with one entrance.

Is there a wasp that is about the same size as a cicada killer or larger (1.5-3 in or so) that also lives underground?

Maybe one that is brown/yellow not black/yellow? I just saw some cicada killer wasps earlier today and I do not remember these unknown wasps being that brightly colored, I think they were more muted in color. Any ideas?

The sand wasp is a similar wasp to the cicada-killer wasp. It is nearly the same size and it forms colonies.
