Is there another way to remember vocabulary words instead of using writing them down on an index card?

Assuming you have a list of them in a book or notebook, you can:

repeat them to yourself

write them multiple times

make up sentences with them

cover up the words, read the definitions and say the word

cover up the definitions, read the words and define them

have someone test you on the words (answer orally or in writing)

have the word and definition on tape and listen to it over and over

chant the words, sing them

make meaningful pictures for the words

find synonyms and antonyms for your words

classify your words (parts of speech, positive/ negative, subject area, etc.)

use your words as much as you can when you are talking to people

write a letter (paper or email) to someone using your new vocabulary words

IM with someone in your class and use your words in a discussion (serious or silly)

There are many ways you can do it.  Try to use what you are interested in to help you.

Sure there are plenty of ways if you are willing to take some sort of effort into learning and using them. You can go on collegeboard to get the SAT word of the day or go on freerice.com to play their vocabulary game. It's a multiple choice thing and the more you do it the harder it will get. The good thing about freerice.com is that for every word you get right you will donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nation World Food Program. Also try reading books, the classic ones. Like Austen novels if you like romance with witty lines or Kurt Voneggut novels if you are into those black comedies/satires sort of thing. But whatever books, or articles you read, take in the words that you don't know and look it up in a dictionary right away. That way you won't forget that you ever came across that word. And remember that after you look up any words, try to use it in your conversation or in your writings. Eventually and gradually you will find yourself unconsciously using new vocabularies.
