If your car has a sturdy bumper you may be able to use bumper racks ?

Good bumper racks is the right answer--I carried a yamaha Viargo 750 from oregon to Az. with them.

You can get a small trailer, and have your car outfitted with a proper towing hitch setup. Don't go cheap though. Cheap ones can either not fit right, or can crack. Valley products makes a good selection, as well as Draw-tite. In my experience, Draw-tite has more applications. And don't forget the wiring! =)
