There are some books out there including the screenplay which looks like an excellent book.

I'm not sure about traditional books, but there have been many critically aclaimed graphic novels that are really outstanding.

Two that I recommend are The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and The Killing Joke by Alan Moore.

If you want something involving the joker that's twisted and dark I'd go with The Killing Joke. It doesn't get much more twisted than that.
