  1. You really don't want Bose (See below), but first, to work on a laptop, you need powered speakers (aka "computer speakers").

Many HDTVs will power external stereo unpowered speakers ... but may also power computer speakers if you don't want to use a receiver/amplifier. You can only get surround sound though if the computer speakers accept an optical of digital coax input from a suitable output jack on the HDTV.

In general you can expect better sound from non-computer speakers (although some of the better computer speaker models can be competitive with HTIB type speaker systems in the $500 price range).

Re Bose: See 1st link for a list of Bose systems.

Based on the quality/price ratio from Bose (very low), anything at that price would sound like an AM radio with 2" speakers.

Seriously, Bose is overpriced, underperforming equipment (see 2nd link). Any number of manufacturuers make stuff that outperforms it for a fraction of the price. Simply check reviews and see how many Bose systems ever get high ratings. For example, see the 3rd link for a listing of surround systems. The top rated ones don't contain the name Bose.

See the last link for a listing of computer speakers.

  2. I would say don't buy Bose. They are overpriced and you can get the same quality for less.
