Is there any academic evidence that baby birds choke on whole peanuts?

We are told not to feed whole peanuts to birds at this time of year to prevent the risk of baby birds choking on them (and I feed peanuts in a mesh feeder) but is there any actual evidence, i.e, academic papers, that shows/proves birds can be harmed in this way.
