Question:

Is there any action I can take to get a car company to pay for a safety issue that hasn't been recalled?

I have a 2006 Ford Taurus in which my gas pedal sticks causing a very unsafe riving condition. It's no longer under warranty and doesn't fall under any manufacturer recalls. I have contacted Ford and was told I'd have to get it inspected by a Ford dealership. The dealership wants to charge me an inspection fee. Is there any thing I can do to not pay for this or be reinbursed?

  1. No. There were MILLIONS of Taurus' built and sold in the U.S. and if there were a factory defect on the gas pedals there would be tons of data to back up a factory program or recall. Have you ever considered the fact that it is simply a wear & tear malfunction? Everything breaks and wears out, pal -- sounds to me like you just want someone else to pay the bill for you. Besides -- if they inspect it and find out it IS a defect you will probably be off the hook....

  2. This is very common on ford vehicles and if there is no recall you wont get anything from them.

First check and make sure that the throttle assembly will work freely by using your hand to move it back and forth and then look to see if the throttle assembly is dirty.

If it is dirty you will need to clean it out and if not then it will likely be the cable, then replace it.

  3. There are many possible reasons for this problem.  It could be grime build-up, it could be stretched or dirty linkage, but it is likely a maintenance problem, not a safety defect.  they don't issue a recall unless it is a defect.  Maintenance and cleaning are your responsibility.

If inspection shows a defect, Ford will fix it.  If inspection shows it needs maintenance, well, you have to pay for maintenance anyway, right?

  4. Unfortunately, the mfr will not issue a recall until blood has been spilled or they find it themselves...To solve the immediate problem, get with a auto repair shop and have them check it out...Then take a look at the web site for the state where you live and see if there is a dept of consumer affairs...Give them a shout and see what develops...Finally, keep a written record of all your experiences with this condition...It will help in any inquiry that may look at the problem.

    Good luck

  5. car companies always abrosr the cost of the recall. why did you have to pay for this... I am surprized.

  6. If it's a manufacturer's defect then they should fix it for free and your inspection should be covered too.  But the chances of them admitting that is slim to none.  Good luck.
