  1. WTAER EVAPORATES

  2. yes! plain water will rust your cooling system and also freeze in the winter and bust the block. anti-freeze will help to keep your engine cool and protect it from freezing and wont rust.

  3. Heck yea!!!

Water corrode and freeze without Anti-freeze / coolant solution

You are costing yourself much more $$ than you save.

Anti-freeze / coolant is a chemical cocktail of anti-corrosion and anti-freeze.  When water become hot (and pressurize) it become very reactive and corrosive.  When water freeze it will EASILY crack the engine block.

It is water that does most of cooling (heat transfer). So you need both (50/50) solution.

It seems like you need some general car maintenance facts.  There are 4 most important maintenance items in your engine and tranny (the most expensive parts of the car).

    (1) engine oil (3k - 5K miles)

    (2) tranny oil (30K miles)

    (3) coolant (3 years)

    (4) timing belt (60K miles)

Just keep those maintenance and your engine and tranny will be problem free.  I have a 94 Civic with 187K miles and

the engine + tranny + suspension runs like new.  I get 41 MPG (doing 72 MPH).  I can get even better MPG doing 55.

    Good maintenance pays off.

    Good Luck...

  4. anti corosion anti rust   boil over protection  freeze protection

  5. No advantage, you have to mix the coolant and water 50/50.

  6. What gearnofear said. He's hit the nail on the nosey.

  7. The coolant helps increase the boiling point of the water; it also helps decrease the temperature that it will freeze at. Using normal tap water is ok for a very short term fix. However I would not fill the engine and run it with tap water. The constant heating and cooling of the water will cause the minerals in the water to build up in the radiator, heater core and water passages in the engine. Not only does this decrease the cooling capabilities of the system, over the long term it will destroy the engine as it will no longer be able to cool off them way it was designed. This summer alone I have replaced numerous radiators that have been clogged do to tap water use. We replaced a motor that over heated do to build up in the water passages in the engine block, and we constantly need to explain to people the importance of not adding tap water when they don't have too. It's best to just not do it. Distilled water can be had pretty cheap, and there is no reason why you shouldn't have it in your shed.
