  1. The "Dark Ages" are generally considered as extending from the overthrow of the western Roman Empire until about 800 AD or a little later. It varied but this was generally when written records were vague in western Europe.......

  2. In European historiography, the term Dark Age or Dark Ages refers to the Early Middle Ages in the West, the period extending from the overthrow of the last Western Roman Emperor in 476 to approximately AD 1000. The concept of a Dark Age was created by the Italian scholar Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca) in the 1330s and was originally intended as a sweeping criticism of the character of Late Latin literature. Later historians expanded the term to refer to the transitional period between Classical Roman Antiquity and the High Middle Ages, including not only the lack of Latin literature, but also a lack of contemporary written history, general demographic decline, limited building activity and material cultural achievements in general. Popular culture has further expanded on the term as a vehicle to depict the Middle Ages as a time of backwardness, extending its pejorative use and expanding its scope.

  3. A.D. 500 to about A.D. 1000.  don't know enough to say why.

  4. The Dark Ages are officially from 476 to 1000 ad, but experts vary on this.

After all, the worst of the Dark Ages was over by 711, at which time the Muslims had conquered North Africa, and Spain.  Most of the western world by then was a relatively safe and civilized place (Compared to just after the fall of the Roman Empire).  Things improved further in the mini-Renaissance when King Charlemagne ruled (united France, Germany, most of Italy), from about 750 to 810.

  5. The Dark Ages are the period of European history roughly between the fall of Rome and the Crusades--A. D. 476-1099.  The fall of Rome is a pretty obvious choice as a beginning, and the Crusades put Western Europe in contact with more civilized societies and led to many cultural advances.

  6. Yes, the term Dark Ages used to be used a lot. It was around the time of the fall of the Roman Empire. Life became so bleak, especially when compared the the Roman times of plenty. Go to http://www.allabouthistory.org/the-dark-... and read about the Dark Ages.
