Question:

Is there any archelogical evidence of Jesus?

I understand anything in this section is a magnet for flaming but I would just like to know -

Is there any verified archaeological evidence of him? Not those multiple "miracle" fakes that were shown to be fraudulent like the Shroud that supposedly covered him.

Please argue atheism vs Christianity in the other 492938 questions in this topic. I am not interested in any explanations of "you only need faith" or any of the sort. Just a Yes or No with preferably a reliable source (hopefully from a Peer-reviewed journal) cited

  1. Just think of him as a 2000 year old mind manipulating device meant to order people in herds. Its so much simpler.

Hes still around.. Beleive it or not. Hes lives everyday in peoples heads who kneel to him.

  2. Nope, scientists try to make up stuff like that. Don't get me wrong though he still exists.

  3. I would say that the fact that he is mentioned in texts of many different civilizations is pretty good proof.

I am not a religious person, but I have no doubt that he existed.

  4. A lot of BS answers here. Aside from second and third hand sources, no better than hearsay, there is not an iota of archaeological evidence for Jesus.

I can not give you any peer reviewed journal articles, because there are none. Not on respectable science journals, anyway.

  5. well he was in my college history book

have you ever heard of the shroud?

  6. I believe his image was on coins found recently and I also heard they found a ossuary containing the bones of James, brother of Jesus.

  7. Yes, there are some Roman documents that refer to Jesus, not a lot maybe a sentence or two. The Discovery Channel had something about the Tomb of Jesus, I believe James Cameron either directed or narrated the event of where they thought Jesus' tomb to be located. They did find some evidence but it was skeptical.

  8. If you read the "Jesus Family Tomb" by S. Jacobovici and C. Pellegrino( HarperCollins, 2007) you will find out that there is very good archeological evidence, not only for Jesus, but

also for his mother, Mary, his wife Mirianme,  his father Joseph, his brother James and his son Jose.

  9. yes. dead see scrolls.

    mentioned in babolonian prophecies.

    mentioned in old egyption records.

there is a letter from pontious pilate to the emperor of rome.

  10. I would like to know when they have dulicated the shroud because it has yet to be done. Yes, there is mention in Jewish writting but, of course, it is degrading him.  The Romans knew of him but it can't be determined if it is from Roman sources or early Christian sources. Historians have reviewed the gospels and have determined his death and burial to be accurate.  Why would anyone create a story of a man dying a shameful death, only the poor were killed that way,and make them the leader of a movement, if it wasn't true.  If it were made up, he would have been a wealthy man and fought the Romans. He wouldn't have suffered and died. He wouldn't have said, "Why have you forsaken me."

  11. Considering you are asking for archeological evidence. Back in 2001 a covenant was discovered in Jerusalem. It was the covenant in which back in the Christ times people's remainings were held. On the covenant, it said - The name of the person, bother of Jesus!

Usually on those covenants it said: ....., son of ....., having the brother of - is very, very rare unless the brother was a very important person.

The covenant was taken to Tronto and theological, areheological, antropological scientist gathered to analyse and discusse it. The language and the scripture on the convenant were exactly the ones that Jesus was supposed to have used and it dates from the same period.

This of course goes against the belief of the Church, that Marie was a virgin if she had more children! So the Catholic Church brushed off the finding. However most scientists do believe that the covenant belonged to the brother of Jesus.

That is one proof I believe in!
