  1. The speed of the HDMI cable tends to give you slightly better picture quality, not to mention enhances the audio. Although HDMI cables are a bit more pricey, it neatens your entire setup. One HDMI vs. 5 component cables per device. You do the math.

My Tosheba Regza maxes out at 1080i too. I use a Monster HDMI cable and the picture is amazing.

  2. HDMI can offer reduced artifacts.

Component cables carry analog signals. The destination (the TV) usually converts the signals to digital.  The chips and electronics to do this .. are somewhat expensive and many TV brands cheap out on this.  This results in the occasional glitch/artifact.

But HDMI is digital and keeping things digital means little to no conversion so you get fewer artifacts.

  3. Yes! HDMI carries 1080p video signals digitally (something component tech can't do). Also, carries the supported Hi-res audio signals (Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD Master Audio; something component technology can't do).

  4. HDMI is better because it carries both audio and video and the picture is slightly sharper, component carries only video so you have to connect RCA or Optical for audio.

Don't let salesman con you into monster cables, they are no better.
