I was thinking of booking a 1 day tour of Stonehenge at Haggis Adventure, it is not mention in there website and nothing in the reviews that you can come closer and touch it, is it included in the tour of getting nearer to the stones?

  1. I've driven past Stonehenge many times I really don't understand how its possible to make a 1-Day tour out of it - it can't possibly be good value for money.

  2. what do you mean by closer?  I went to Stonehenge and just drove there and got in (free as a member of English Heritage).  You can't go right up to them and touch them (or not the main stones anyway, you can touch a few of the ones further away from the main circle).

I don't know if any tours allow you to go up and touch the stones, but you can wander around the circle and see them.

Try going to somewhere like Avebury too if you're disappointed with the tour you go on because I think, at Avebury, they're scattered all over the area, not roped off.

At Stonehenge, they're worried about damage to the stones or the constant wearing away of the ground around them causing them, eventually, to fall, so that's why they don't let you go right up to them anymore.

  3. The above information is incorrect. You can to book with one of the specialist tour companies that organizes early morning or late evening access during the summer. Then you can get inside the circle and touch the stones. it costs more though. Look  up the tour companies on the Web.

    e.g.http://www.viator.com/tours/England/Ston...

The same tour company also has this Stonehenge page:

    and:http://www.ticketswitch.com/tickets/slin...

Or you can book directly through English Heritage, there is a PDF application form on:

If you organize it yourself It will cost you £13 per person I believe. I will say it's worth doing, you will be amazed at the size of the stones when you stand next to them. Be sure to read up before you go, check the Wiki Stonehenge site* to get most from your visit, hope you enjoy your trip!

  4. you won't get any closer by booking the tour than you would normally ... normally you either stay on the road outside the field where the stones are and look at them for free ... or you pay the admission price and go inside the field ... if you pay and go inside you are not allowed right up close to the stones and are definitely not allowed to touch them, but you can walk round the field so that you see them from all angles
