I was in the same kind of position and I chose to do apartment rental as I worked out that it worked out cheaper than a hotel and also came us more freedom and we saved tonnes on having to eat out all the time. Rome is brilliant of course for eating out, but when you have kids, eating out 3 times a day gets real expensive.

Rome can be quite expensive, 50euros is not a lot. anyhow, shearing the room can lower the cost of the room, so try;

or try typing into any search engine "cheap hotels in Rome" and see what they come up with!

I usually use www.selectitaly.com but I'm telling you know if you go that cheap you are going to be staying in a not so nice place usually a 1-2 star possible a community bathroom. I looked for rooms this cheap about a year ago and we had to move our limit up to almost E100 just to get something desent. But the websit that I gave you usually has cheap stuff.

Depending on how long you are going to stay you may be able to get a lower price.  Don't be afraid to bargain.  There are lots of cheap 'pensioni' in the areas around Stazioni Termini (Rome's main railroad station.)
