  1. Actually, it's not a good idea to plant random apple seeds -- unless you have a lot of land! They don't come true to seed -- you might get a good eating apple, or you might get one that is sour, or small, or susceptible to disease.

If you are willing to try your luck, just plant one in a paper cup, then plant it in your garden in the fall. Keep it weeded, and in seven years, you'll see if it is a good apple or not (it takes that long for it to produce fruit).

    Have fun!

(If you want to learn more about apples, check out Michael Pollan's book, The Botany of Desire. Really great stuff!)

  2. YES

    HOWEVER,

GROWING APPLES FROM SEEDS IS NOT RECOMMENDED, for a "beginner".

They will "hybridize" and you will not know what you will get, after a lot of work, and years!  FRUITING can begin in the second year (OR LONGER!) depending on the climate and conditions.

Most people do not want to wait 2 years or longer to find out that what they planted is not "up to par".

Many of the finer Apple sorts are GRAFTED on hardy stock, and not grown from seed.

I you still want to try your luck at "pot luck" do the following:

Use a half-loamy, half-sandy soil.  Do not plant the seed deeper than 3 times the thickness of the seed.

As apples originate in temperate climates, they will like light, but not sun, while germinating.  Keep moist, but not wet.  When they start growing, move into light but not strong sun light!

PERHAPS you would like to learn some more about Apple Growing and Orchards?  If so, Please see the link I have included.  I WOULD RECOMMEND BUYING GOOD SEEDLINGS, BUT GOOD LUCK!

  3. Just plant them.  Many seeds need cold periods to induce germination.  You could pot them up and let them set out over winter.  Keep in mind though, that the seeds will not be true to the parent plant
