  1. yeah mate the higher octane petrols burn cleaner whilst the normal unleaded has a lower octane and therfore doesnt burn as clean. In most bikes it is a good idea to run premium especially in motocross bikes.

  2. yes, higher compression engines require higher octane. follow your manual's reccomendation.

Here's a link to a great site about octane and engines.

  3. I love this question. I always get a thumbs down but I'll keep answering it the same way. Common sense isn't so common after all!

If by power fuel, you mean premium gas, then yes there is a difference.

I'm a sport biker (ZX-6, GSX/R600, YZF750R, CBR1000RR) so my opinions and experience are about sport bikes.

91/ 93 / 97 / 100 octane unleaded gas is best used in high compression engines. Which sport bikes have! It combats pre-detonation and reduces knock and ping issues.

The other and more popular benefit is that with a much higher detergent content, the gas burns cleaner than 87 octane. In some cases, so much cleaner, that it has a cleaning effect on the fuel system. A cleaner fuel system is more efficient. A bike with a clean efficient fuel system will have better performance than a bike with a gunked up less efficient fuel system.

Cleaner fuel = less gunk = better MPG + performance.

Let me be clear that using premium doesn't increase power or performance. In some cases it allows you to recover lost performance from using bum juice (87 octane).

Many sport bikers occasionally add a gallon or two of 112 leaded gas to another 2 gallons of 93. I'm not sure about the effects of using leaded gas but I've done it and I notice an immediate response in my bike's performance for the better.

Most owners manuals recommendation is 87 octane as a MINIMUM. Meaning you can use higher.
