  1. j dog has a very good answer.  I will expand on that answer.

The DS will have to substitute into the game with the authorization of the referees.  The DS substitutions are recorded by the scorekeeper.  The Libero just runs in and replaces any back row player without the authorization of the officials.  The Libero replacements are recorded by the assistant scorekeeper or Libero tracker.

The DS can serve in any set of rules.  The Libero can only serve in US junior high schools, US high schools, and US women's college rules.

The DS is limited in the number of times they can enter the game.  The Libero replacements are unlimited as long as they sit out one play.

The DS can use their hands to set the ball to any player.  The only violation is if they are inside the 3 meter line (10 foot line) AND the ball is completely above the height of the net AND they send it over.  The Libero can not use their hands to set a ball AND they are on or inside the 3 meter line AND the next player hits the ball while it is completely above the height of the net.

The DS must wear the same uniform shirt and shorts as the rest of the team.  The Libero must wear a different and contrasting colored shirt from the rest of the team.

The DS may attack a ball that is completely above the height of the net if their last contact with the floor is behind the 3 meter line.  The Libero may not attack any ball that is completely above the height of the net at any time.  No matter where they are on the court.

The DS may attempt to block.  It is not a violation unless it is touched by someone in that blocking group.  The Libero may not even attempt to block or it is a violation.

The DS may only go in for one position during the game.  The DS will only play half of the game.  The Libero may replace any back row player.  The Libero will play almost every play.

The DS and Libero have the same purpose.  They are playing the back row in order to take the place of players that are not as good in the back row.  They also give a rest to players that can concentrate on the front row.

  2. Nope, just different names

  3. No a libero is a ds its just another name!!!

  4. They are both defensive players but there is a difference!

A libero has his/her own set of rules...they sub in and out between points for any player, but have to serve in the same rotation,  they can't set to any player in front of the 10-foot line, they wear a different color jersey, they can't leave their feet when they attack the ball...plus a few other rules.  They even have their own "libero tracker" at the score table
