For example my website now is www.janinetoro.com, i have another link that is say music.janinetoro.com and I use that as a ftp for people to upload files to. However I want to have a photography section my website photography.janinetoro.com and upload a web page to it. Is there any difference in the set up or there purpose or is it all essentially the same thing. But the music one there is no html files so thats why it wouldn't appear as a website and only and FTP where people would add there files?

  1. All ftp sites are the same thing.. they are just folders on a server that you can access using the file transfer protocol (ftp)...Now... often a webserver will point to the same folder to get its source files.

Therefore you can upload your website files to an ftp site (remote folder) and a webserver can point to those same files to display them.  It is possible to have an ftp server without a web server just for the basis of downloads and uploads.  It is possible to have a webserver without an ftp server but then you couldnt upload source files without having direct access to that server or via a lan to drop the files down.

  2. Hi Janine,

FTP sites are simply a place to put and get files.  So if you wanted to share a file with someone, you could ftp it to an ftp site and the other person could go there a get it.

For webpages to work after upload, the upload site has to be a webserver.  The webserver would know what to do with it where the ftp server (site) wouldn't...typically.  An ftp site can also be a webserver, but there's alot more to it than uploading anywhere...

Confusing for sure.  You should be subscribing to a webserver.  The administrator(s) of the site will tell you where to place the pages and so on.

    Good luck!
