i just want to know if there would be any picture difference between a hdmi and component connection on a up scaling dvd player. its not true hi def so i don't think there would be any difference, however the progressive scan function on the dvd player will only work with a component connection so i would a component connection be better overall?

i only ask because i would have to pay for a hdmi splitter if i did keep it how it is now, or i could get the component leads

  1. Component out of an upconverting player can go up to 480p.

HDMI out can go up to 1080p.

However, every HDTV can upconvert from component just fine, so it all depends on whether your TV or your player has the better upconverter.

Normally, you need a test DVD or special movie sequences to test upconverting performance, but if you can't see the difference, then there is nothing to worry. Feel free to use standard composite video+stereo audio cables as temporary component to test how good is the upconverter of your TV vs the player using HDMI.
