  1. Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers.By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:.

  2. S = Secured

  3. Absolutely...https is used for secure HTTP connections with encryption and authentication over secure socket layers (SSL).  It also goes through a different TCP port (443) from a standard http connection (port 80).

It's typically used for online transactions like banking or shopping or for any other website that requires a higher level of security.

  4. Yes, http is request to DNS servers goes simple (readable) mode and can easily trap by any mean or hacking mind. As for https, it is secure socket which actually encrypt your data into machine language depends what level of encryption you got in your https liscense (128 or 256 or higher) more higher more strength. but main difference is encyrption. https is encrypted data ( not readable) and http is with no encryption ( easily readable ).
