  1. No only the Monster brand HDMI cables are pricey. You can find all kinds of other good cables on the market that will do the same job without paying for the advertisement of their name.

S video carries analog video signals only. Check out this site and hopefully it will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about setting up a home theater. Your going to love HD TV;)

  2. You can get HDMI cables for $5, which is less that what some places charge for s-video.  If you have a HDTV, DO NOT SKIMP on the S-Video!

    Get A hdmi cable!

  3. S video is not HD it is only capable of 480i not even 480p

Use the HDMI as it provides a digital connection as well as it will support HDCP (High Definition Content Protection). All the new upconverting DVD players and BluRay/HDDVD have to have this in order to play at 1080i and above. If you use any other connection than HDMI you will not be able to have better than 480p. Again ,S video only goes up to 480i.

  4. You can get an in expensive hdmi cable on e bay, it works just fine. I got 3 6 ft cables for $13. you cant go wrong !

  5. You don't want S-video ... it's not HD.

HDMI cables do vary in quality, but as long as it is physically well constructed inexpensive (<$10) and expensive cable will work identically for short length connections (up to 10-15 feet).

See the link for a discussion and experimental results comparing budget and expensive (Monster) cables.
