I have to write an essay on how we learn from history. For example experiences from past wars helped a country to avoid another war.

  1. The Great Depression.  No economic downturn has been as long, or as bad, since then.

Social programs were begun, to stabilize the economy.  (eg, everyone loses their jobs in their community, they might still recieve half their original income through employment insurance, instead of zero).  The stock market and other financial markets were better regulated.

Also, the principle was established that the government had the duty/right to intervene in an economic downturn - Not, as

Pres. Hoover attempted, just sit back and wait while the business cycle would try to right itself.

  2. Well, for instance, once right after 9/11 some reporter stuck one of those microthingys in my face, and I said "Crusade", and BOY, did d**k and Don give ME an earful!!!!  So, I learned my lesson and haven't said a single stupid thing since!

  3. My personal opinion is no, History has always repeated itself because we as America's has still not learned, it dosn't repeat in the same manner but it' about the same, but that just my opinion I'm just one person, but do some research ya"ll learn a lot that's happening know happening in the 20th century with the economy

  4. wars are never ending. that's a pretty obvious fact. and yes some countries may have learned to not start one again like how japan bombed pearl harbor. but in return we destroyed their cities with atomic bombs so they surrendered. but even if countries try to not start wars they might just get dragged into one anyway.

  5. Wow, where to start.  Certainly, man learns from his mistakes.  Unfortunately...we don't practice what we learn.  I think experiences in past wars CAN help countries to avoid new wars.  The American Civil War is one example.  The US hasn't stayed out of war completely, but we've never had another civil war, have we?  Some countries had dozens of civil wars.  We learn all sorts of things all the time.  We learned through trial and error about hygene and you don't see us having another Black Death, do you?  Even 9/11 taught us a lot.  Americans learned we aren't un-touchable.

  6. The world learned lessons from two horrible world wars. During the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union did everything possible to avoid going to war and fought each other through proxy wars in Third World countries. Thus, they avoided World War III. And still today, the last time that developed, industrialized countries with powerful militaries "went to war" in the traditional sense was World War II. The world is more peaceful today than ever before because of the United Nations and other organizations.

Modern warfare incorporates many other lessons from the world wars. For example, weapons have become more precise to avoid civilian casualties. And today there are many international efforts to bring about awareness to genocide.

  7. Sorry, I can honestly say I can not think of a single occasion when mankind has learned from its mistakes.

  8. In the first place, History NEVER repeats itself.  Similar events may reoccur, but are NOT repeated.

Also consider that not every single event that has occured has been recorded and kept, there is no way of knowing if ANY lessons have been learned and mistakes avoided.

However, in the spirit of helping with your essay, you might be able to make a case for the two atomic bombings of Japan, at the end of WWII have NOT been repeated, since, because of the fear of what might happen if someone were to try using nuclear weapons again.  Consider that, at the time of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, those two weapons were the ONLY ones in existance.  Think about how many nations have weapons, now, and how many total bombs and missles might exist in all of the world's arsenals.  Think also, about how many of these nations have and have had very REAL grudges against other nations.

With all of those thousands of nukes in existance, now, might you consider that the lessons learned, of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, are still being applied, today?

  9. after the us government won the Native American wars. There has never been a native American war since.
