  1. The mechanism in birds is just now becoming understood but there is no question than many birds use the earth's magnetic field for navigation. For instance, you can confuse a pigeon by putting it in an artificial magnetic field.

    There are bacteria that use the earth's magnetic field to locate themselves, and I believe magnetic location is pretty widespread among animals.
