i ask bc I already breastfeed and only supplement once or twice a day. I read they derive these from algae and fungus, therefore, I do not want my child ingesting that. also, the ara and dha additive ahs only been around for 6 yrs---meaning we dont know what effects they could have on our children later. who knows it may be carcinogenic. I know what ara and dha is for, I already breastfeed a lot therefore my baby is getting plenty. but now and then I will give her formula. of course I want the best for my child, sheesh.

  1. Just in re. the other answers -- from a study sponsored by the makers of Similac:

"In the randomized trial, one group received a standard formula, another group received a formula that had been supplemented with DHA from fish oil, and a third group received a formula supplemented with both DHA and arachidonic acid from an egg phospholipid.

Outcome Measures.  Mental and Motor Scales of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development at 12 months of age; vocabulary and gesture communication scores from the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories at 14 months of age.

Results.  There were no statistically significant differences for either the Bayley Mental Scale or the Bayley Motor Scale, neither when the analysis was restricted to the three randomized formula groups nor when the analysis included all four groups. However, the DHA formula group had significantly lower scores on two of the MacArthur scales: the DHA group scored lower than the nonrandomized human milk comparison group on the Vocabulary Comprehension Scale, and the DHA group scored lower than the randomized control formula group on the Vocabulary Production Scale. Moreover, additional analyses both in the formula groups and in the human milk comparison group found significant negative correlations between DHA levels and vocabulary outcomes.

Conclusion.  We believe that additional research should be undertaken before the introduction of these supplements into standard infant formulas."

There is no risk-free way to supplement with formula; it is worth your time to express milk.

  2. I don't think so.  Why don't you want that in the formula?

  3. I dont think so...why dont you want it..it helps your babues development and brain..it makes it closer to breast milk

  4. what is wrong woth ARA and DHA ?

  5. DHA and ARA are essential for growth and development. Without these, your child has a much higher chance of being developmentally challenged, these are found in breast milk. I cannot imagine why you wouldn't want to provide the best for your child.

  6. Most people don't look for things that don't help their children ON PURPOSE.

  7. why would you want a formula without them?

    you have both in breastmilk.

the only negative thing that has been reported is that the "organic" label on some formulas is compromised by adding the algae and fungus based synthetic blends

no adverse reactions have been reported except for gas and diarrhea but they are gonna get that anyway
