My daughter is a US citizen, she wants to study for her undergraduate engineering degree in the UK. For this she has to pay fees as a foreign students. The expenses inclusive of fees and living expenses amount to about $200,000. This is more than we can afford. There are no scholarships available for her in the UK. Does anyone know of any organisations or US department where we can apply for grants, or aid? She is an A grade student.

  1. Actually you will find that there are quite a few sources of funding available to your daughter if she wishes to study in the United Kingdom, not least of all she can apply for FAFSA.

Below are some links to help you out regarding how to use an FAFSA in the U.K. and other sources of scholarships and grants available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who wish to study in the U.K.

There are also many other incentives for your daughter to study in the U.K. such as eligiblity for free health care if the duration of her course is 6 months or more.

She would also be able to work in the U.K. part-time (20 hours per week) during the semesters and full-time (40 hours per week) during the holiday periods (summer, christmas etc). Futhermore, there are no restrictions placed on where she can work provided she meets the requirements set forth by the employer - the money she earns could be used as spending money or to pay for part of her living expenses or tuition.

Finally, if she or you wishes for a much cheaper cost of living and tuition then I would suggest you look a universities and cities in the north of the country. Universities such as Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and York are all much more affordable than their southern counterparts, and they still provide the same level of education in great cities which are more affordable when it comes to renting, gas prices, grocery shopping etc.

These cities (amongst others) also offer more fianancial incentives such as student discounts for travel (bus, train), concert tickets and much more.

  2. Tell her to get a job, before and after work.
