  1. Yes, some reciprocating engines and turbopropeller engines have reduction gears.

A s***w propeller is itself a helical gear, and on some planes its pitch can be changed--ranging from low pitch to high (fully feathered) pitch.

  2. Because propellers work best in the 1500 - 3000 rpm range, any engine which turns faster than that must be geared down. That includes many light aircraft engines and most larger piston engines, and all turboprops. The gear ratios are not adjustable for reasons of simplicity and weight, and because it's more efficient to adjust the propeller pitch to control thrust levels.

  3. Airplanes do not use gears propellers are designed to operate at a certain rpm usually in the 2-3000 range.

The additional weight from a gear box would cancel out any increased engine efficiency.  Weight is the killer in aircraft efficiency.

  4. Yes  many engines have reduction gears but they are not shifted. The Cessna 175 uses a geared engine. Also, the P-51 Mustang R/R engine had a geared prop., among the many.

  5. Some old propeller aircraft have geared engines; for every turn of the crankshaft the prop turns more or less -- but it is a constant ratio, no shifting.

  6. no it has a longitudnal gear  shift supported by a van de graff genarator....with 29 levers

  7. No.  They use thrust from the engines to propel them selves while on the ground.

  8. They don't have gear.

  9. Some aircraft do have but it is a constant ratio. A view of the ultralights using rotex engine have got them. Older aircraft like the C421 had them as well the big problem with them are that if you bring the power back to quickly the prop starts turning the engine and this causes massive damage to the engine. You aslo have to wait for the oil in the gearbox to heat up and money wise this costs loads.
